With the popularity of the Ford Bronco still at an all-time high, new rumors rear their head in the form of a possible diesel engine variant. This is not an official confirmation from Ford, but a diesel-powered Bronco has simply not gone to sleep.
For the off-road enthusiast, this is where a diesel motor would really make this vehicle pop. And with diesels, the immediate advantages are obvious: high torque, great economy, and reliability for long, grueling trails. The speculation among enthusiasts now is that Ford will indeed offer a diesel to go head-to-head with other off-road behemoths, such as the Jeep Wrangler, which does have a diesel offering.
Why A Diesel Bronco Could Be Huge
This would be significant for several reasons. First, diesel engines usually produce greater low-end torque making them appropriate for off-roading where power in low gears can distinguish between washboard dirt roads and rocky paths. In addition, diesel broncos consume less fuel than gasoline ones. That means that they can be used for long trips with little or no refueling at all. However, despite the overwhelming buzz on the internet, some are not convinced. Greater stringency of U.S. emissions regulations has made it difficult for automotive manufacturers to rationalize engine choices. That may also pose a challenge to Ford before such speculations can manifest themselves one day.
The Diesel Bronco: What Could It Look Like?
Most likely, if Ford were to offer a diesel-powered Bronco. It would be a 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 engine already in use on the F-150 and Ranger. That engine puts out an impressive 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, which is plenty to crawl through rocks and steep hills. Its addition would put the Bronco more in the crosshairs for those who spend a lot of time off the pavement in really rough country and want/need the fuel economy that comes with diesels.
For now, fans will have to cross their fingers. How much Ford delivers a diesel Bronco, only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: this rumor mill isn’t anyplace to slow down anytime soon.
